Summer School Short Course: Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans and Natives in Ancient Spain

Join the Hellenic Museum and Dr Christopher Gribbin at the eighth annual Summer School. Spend a week exploring the spectacular and fascinating world of the ancient Greeks and Romans in this series of informative, relaxed and entertaining short courses, where anyone is welcome!

In antiquity, Spain was an important meeting place of cultures. Greeks and Phoenicians were attracted by its abundant metal deposits and trade opportunities. They established colonies along the Mediterranean coast which interacted with the native societies in a variety of ways, sometimes positive, sometimes negative. Later, Carthaginian and Roman armies fought over Spain in their efforts to control the Western Mediterranean. In late antiquity, the Byzantine Empire fought Visigoths for control of Spain before the Muslims took over in the 8th century CE. Each of these cultures had an impact on Spain and left their mark behind. This course explores the history of ancient Spain, the different cultures who lived there and their legacies.

The course consists of 5 sessions over 5 days, delivered in-person or online at 10–11AM daily (AEDT). People taking part online can participate live or watch recorded lectures at a time of their convenience. Sessions will cover:

1. Greeks, Phoenicians and trade in the Mediterranean
2. Greek and Phoenician colonisation and its impacts
3. The Punic Wars and the Roman conquest
4. Life in Roman Spain
5. Visigoths, Byzantines and Muslims
