Grecs Après un Revers [Greeks after a defeat], 1829

    Ary Scheffer (artist)

    London: J.McCormick, 30 Fore Street. Hand-coloured lithograph. 49 x 42 cm.

Romantic artists appear to have been inspired more by the misfortunes and losses of the Greek War of Independence than its achievements. The soldiers gaze at a burning city in the distance, where a long line of refugees snakes in the background. The gloomy and dramatic atmosphere and the details of the men’s clothing and weapons have been lavishly rendered. This scene became quite popular, as gauged by the number of lithographs issued between 1828 and the late 1830s.
